Symptoms that could arise after a car accident

Even when a car accident is not severe, anyone who was involved could experience symptoms days later. Crash victims often experience both emotional and physical trauma, and even if the symptoms are not immediately present, they could be serious. Ohio residents might want to be aware of some of these most common symptoms in case they are involved in a collision.

Whiplash is a very common car accident injury, and it often causes delayed symptoms such as stiffness or pain in the neck or shoulders. Rear-end crashes at no faster than 14 mph are usually the cause of whiplash, and the injury might require image testing to diagnosis it properly. Numbness in the arms and hands could also be the result of whiplash because of damage to the spinal column or neck.

Headache may develop later and indicate that there is a more serious condition such as a serious concussion, blood clot in the brain or neck injury. Back pain could suggest that the muscles, nerves or ligaments in the back are injured or that the vertebrae are damaged. Swelling or pain in the abdomen following a traffic collision might suggest internal bleeding, as could deep, purple bruises, fainting and dizziness. It could take days for internal bleeding to be discovered, and it might result in life-altering injuries that require emergency medical treatment.

A concussion that causes traumatic brain injury might be indicated by changes in physical function or personality. The symptoms of these changes include hearing or vision problems, depression, or impaired movement, memory or thinking. Post-traumatic stress disorder is another condition that could develop days after a crash, and it could involve nightmares and disturbing, vivid memories of the incident.

It is recommended that individuals involved in car accidents seek medical care immediately if they experience any of these symptoms during the first several days following the event. If they wish to pursue compensation, having their medical treatment on record could strengthen their case. They may also seek advice from attorneys on the legal remedies that may be available.
