Cleveland woman dies in wrong-way car accident

The routine nature of driving often gives drivers and passengers a false sense of security. It's the familiarity of the act, the repetitive almost mundane aspect of traveling on the roads that breeds an attitude of invincibility. The cold truth is that car accidents are ever present due in part to the irresponsible behavior of far too many drivers.

The irresponsible and potentially culpable behavior of a 40-year-old driver resulted in the death of a 22-year-old Cleveland, Ohio, woman recently. The woman was a passenger in a vehicle that the man struck when driving the wrong way on a highway exit ramp; the driver of the second vehicle also suffered injuries.

The young woman was taken to a local hospital where she died. It was later discovered that the driver of the offending vehicle was likely intoxicated at the time of the crash.

Ohio police have arrested the driver on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated vehicular assault, as well as pending additional charges related to the driver's intoxication. These criminal charges may serve to punish the driver and prevent his actions on the road from causing any more damage; however the tragedy facing the distraught family who has lost a loved one will not be reversed.

The multiple charges made by authorities may help support any civil action the family of the deceased young woman may bring forward in a claim for compensation. However, the civil and criminal processes are independent of each other, and it is possible to file a claim for wrongful death or personal injury regardless of the existence or outcome of criminal charges.
