Authorities in Ohio are continuing to investigate a two-car crash in Defiance County that left a 28-year-old Sherwood man hospitalized in serious condition on Sept. 12. According to highway patrol troopers, the female driver believed to have caused the accident was pronounced dead at the scene. News reports indicate that both drivers were wearing seat belts when the fatal incident occurred.

The accident happened at approximately 5:20 p.m. at the intersection of Openlander Road and Buckskin Road in Mark Township. News sources say that the deceased woman, a 53-year-old Toledo resident, was driving her sport utility vehicle westbound on Buckskin when she ran a stop sign and collided with the other driver’s northbound SUV. The force of the impact caused both vehicles to roll several times.

Following the incident, the surviving driver was airlifted to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana, for treatment. Sources do not indicate how long he is expected to remain hospitalized. However, a serious car accident could potentially result in traumatic or even catastrophic injuries. The severity of these injuries could require lengthy recovery periods with no guarantee if a victim’s quality of life prior to the crash will be the same.

Cleveland residents who suffer life-altering injuries as a result of negligence on the part of a driver who does not survive the crash may find some degree of relief in knowing that they may still be able to seek compensation for their losses through legal channels. An attorney may be able to ascertain the full extent of a victim’s loss and file a personal injury lawsuit on that individual’s behalf seeking damages against the decedent’s estate. The victim may find that financial recompense for medical expenses, loss of income and property damage could provide the financial resources needed for navigating life following a serious accident.
