1 Ohio driver killed, 5 others injured in major Turnpike accident

A major car accident on Oct. 19 left one Ohio man dead and five people injured. The Ohio State Highway Patrol reports that the fatal crash took place on Ohio Turnpike at mile marker 48 in the eastbound lane. The accident happened when a 58-year-old Salem semi-truck driver failed to yield as traffic slowed upon entering a construction zone, according to authorities.

The semi-truck collided with another 58-year-old male driver's vehicle, and the crash eventually involved an additional five cars. While the semi-truck driver was uninjured, the driver of the other car died at the scene. Five other people, including passengers in the deceased driver's car, were injured because of the crash. Two victims were airlifted from the scene with life-threatening injuries. The other three victims were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Ohio police have announced to the media that the semi-truck driver will face unspecified criminal charges. Both the semi-truck driver and the deceased victim were wearing seat belts when the accident occurred. Police have also ruled out alcohol intoxication as a factor in the crash. All eastbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike were closed for about five hours while the police investigation and clean-up process ensued.

While it is not clear whether the five surviving victims of the car accident sustained life-altering injuries, they may be eligible for compensation in a civil case against the driver. An attorney may also help them receive payment for medical expenses caused by their injuries. In addition to the criminal charges filed, the driver may also face a wrongful death lawsuit if the family of the deceased driver chooses to pursue compensation for loss of companionship and other associated damages.
