Trucker in deadly crash may have fallen asleep

Ohio motorists may be familiar with the dangers associated with fatigued truckers on the roads. High-profile incidents have recently drawn national attention to the issue. A tractor-trailer involved in a deadly Georgia crash on May 19 occurred just 20 miles from the site of a similar fatal truck accident that took place a month earlier.

The earlier of the two Georgia fatal truck accidents resulted in the deaths of five students from Georgia Southern University. The most recent incident caused the deaths of two elderly individuals, two teenagers and a 39-year-old mother of six. The latter accident took place in an area that was undergoing construction. Witnesses noted that the tractor-trailer appeared to drift prior to the incident.

As officials investigate the cause of the collision and the possibility of the truck driver falling asleep, survivors of the decedents are facing challenges with grieving and handling final affairs. The children of the mother killed in the accident are left without her financial support as well. A fatal accident can turn the lives of family members upside down, and in a serious incident involving improper or distracted behavior on the part of a responsible driver, the possibility of personal injury or wrongful death action might be considered to address issues such as a loss of income or medical expenses.

An injured victim who contemplates further action after an accident involving truck driver fatigue might begin by meeting with an attorney to determine if a personal injury lawsuit is an appropriate method of recourse. In some cases, the commercial carrier company itself can be held responsible along with the negligent driver.
