Construction jobs come with increasing dangers

Working on Ohio construction sites can be very dangerous. Although it is a much safer industry to work in than it was in the 60s and 70s, there are still a significant number of deaths that occur each year. There has been a slight uptick in the number of fatal accidents and the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there were 937 construction-related deaths around the country in 2015.

That marks the highest number of construction worker deaths since 2008, and it corresponds with an increase in hiring in the construction industry. As construction firms have a growing need for employees, greater numbers of inexperienced workers are being hired.

While these employment opportunities can be great for individuals looking for work, especially since wages have also increased, new construction workers may be more likely to be injured on the job. These individuals do not have the experience or training of their peers, and they are more liable to make mistakes that can be harmful or even fatal. To help reduce the risk of injury, construction firms are pairing new employees with seasoned ones and stepping up their safety training.

People can be injured or develop a medical condition in just about any line of work, but some are more hazardous than others. To ensure that employees who are hurt at their job or who develop an occupational disease are taken care of, most companies are required to carry workers' compensation insurance. Benefits thereunder can cover medical expenses and in some cases provide partial wage replacement. A lawyer might be of assistance in preparing and filing the required claim documentation.
