Ohio construction industry workers may be vulnerable to injuries or death because of falls. To raise awareness about this issue, OSHA started the National Safety Stand-Down Campaign to Prevent Falls in Construction. In 2017, the National Fall Prevention Stand-Down takes place between May 8 and May 12. The goal is for employers to engage employees in dialogue regarding fall safety and take a look at their own fall protection systems.
Employers are encouraged to talk to employees about the potential hazards that they may face as well as their goals when it comes to creating a safe working environment. Employees are encouraged to talk to their managers about any hazards that they see and to come up with solutions to overcome them. Many different groups participate in the event including construction companies, employee safety interest groups and safety equipment manufacturers.
In addition to scheduling times to talk with employees, other measures can be taken during a safety “stand-down.” For instance, companies may want to schedule some time to inspect equipment or put new protocols into place that mitigate hazards that employees may have pointed out. Although participation in the event is voluntary, it is estimated that 5 million workers have taken part since its inception.
