Ohio marine dies from head-on crash injuries

Sources report that a marine whose car was struck head-on by a dump truck on Ohio 598 while he was returning to base from a 20-day medical leave died in the hospital on Oct. 1. The wreck occurred on Sept. 29 as the 23-year-old man was driving back to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

Police say that a 48-year-old man driving a 2005 Ford dump truck was headed northbound when he dropped off the right side of the roadway. He overcorrected, swerved and crossed the centerline, striking the marine's southbound 2008 Chevrolet Impala head-on and seriously injuring him.

The victim was transported by emergency personnel to St. Vincent's Hospital in Toledo where he later succumbed to his injuries on Oct. 1 after spending two days in critical condition. He had suffered several bone fractures on his hands, feet and hips in addition to having his intestines partially removed. No charges have been filed, and authorities are continuing their investigation of the accident.

When drivers negligently cause the death of another person, they may face both criminal and civil liability for their actions. Even in a situation in which no criminal charges are filed, the families of victims who died in traffic accidents may still possibly recover damages from the negligent driver. Potential damages could include funeral expenses, bereavement and counseling costs, pain and suffering, loss of companionship, lost current and future income, and property loss. Families may benefit by speaking with a personal injury attorney in order to recoup their financial losses.
