Confined spaces lead to work injuries

Ohio workers and their employers should be aware of information surrounding workplace injuries caused by confined spaces. Despite attempts to decrease the risk of injury and death due to these types of accidents, they are a still a common hazard in many types of workplaces. Both employers and employees can mitigate this risk by being informed of current regulations and taking extra precautions.

Annie’s Law seeks to reduce drunk driving fatalities

Ohio House Bill 388, which went into effect in April 2017, makes some significant changes to the laws concerning Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence, or OVI. The bill was named in honor of Annie Rooney, a Chillicothe attorney who was killed by a drunk driver with multiple OVI offenses. The state of Ohio is looking to reduce traffic fatalities of which drunk driving is a major cause.

FMCSA report reveals increase in deadly truck accidents

The number of large trucks involved in fatal accidents around the country increased by 8 percent in 2015 from the previous year according to data released by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The federal agency's annual Large Truck and Bus Crash Facts report indicates that both the number of deadly truck accidents, many of which were in Ohio, and the number of fatal crashes per 100 million miles covered by large commercial vehicles increased as well between 2014 and 2015.

Battling drug addiction of injured workers

There are many Ohio workers who have been injured on the job and who are battling addiction to drugs that have been prescribed for their pain. Workers' compensation programs are taking steps to provide the assistance they require to overcome their addictions and are working to stop the excessive prescription of painkillers. The injured workers are usually prescribed powerful opioids, such as Vicodin and OxyContin.

Construction jobs come with increasing dangers

Working on Ohio construction sites can be very dangerous. Although it is a much safer industry to work in than it was in the 60s and 70s, there are still a significant number of deaths that occur each year. There has been a slight uptick in the number of fatal accidents and the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there were 937 construction-related deaths around the country in 2015.
