Lack of hope may doom a marriage

Marriages in Ohio and elsewhere are more likely to last when both parties to the relationship are hopeful about its future. This hypothesis was tested in a 1992 study conducted by the University of Washington. It found that hopelessness in a relationship can also lead to a lack of hope in other areas of life. It also found that those who lacked it were most likely to be divorced within three years.

When a person becomes disillusioned in a relationship, he or she may not care about the other person's thoughts or feelings. Typically, that person is resigned to believing that nothing can be done to save the relationship and generally no longer wishes to be in the relationship at all. Researchers found that most become disillusioned because marriage is not what they expected it to be, and that they don't want to put the necessary effort into it.

If an individual chooses to initiate divorce proceedings, it could start a period of significant change in that person's life. It may be necessary to find housing and establish credit in that person's name alone. It may also be necessary for an individual to learn how to buy groceries on a budget or otherwise manage his or her own finances. This could be easier by negotiating a favorable divorce settlement, which may be done with the help of an attorney.

An attorney might also help an individual obtain custody of his or her children or a favorable visitation schedule. Legal counsel can also help with other divorce matters such as who gets spousal support or how to divide property. If a couple has a prenuptial agreement, an attorney will likely be able to review it to determine if it can be enforced.
