Summer water safety

On Behalf of | May 9, 2019 | Uncategorized

Between parties, pools and parties at the pool, there is a lot to look forward to now that the snow has melted.

Part of being safe around the pool is knowing what to watch for and how to respond if there is an emergency. Even if you and your family are not able to spend the entire summer by the pool, it is essential to understand water safety for both children and adults.

Here’s how to prepare for a safe summer by the pool.

Drowning doesn’t look like drowning

You have seen it all over movies and T.V. When someone is drowning, they scream and wave their arms for help, right?

Unfortunately, no.

The human body has a lot of instincts when it comes to the water. Unfortunately, some of those instincts have more to do with staying alive than getting help. All the body’s energy involuntarily goes to kicking and preserving breath for as long as possible.

What to do

If you suspect someone is drowning, do not waste time or assume they are playing. Take the following actions:

  • Ask if they need help. If they cannot respond, you only have moments to act.
  • Help them get out of the water. Use whatever equipment or help you need to help them get on dry land.
  • If they need CPR and you feel comfortable, give breaths first. A person who has been near-drowning needs oxygen as soon as possible.
  • Seek medical help. Even if you can get the person breathing again, there could still be other issues that are best left to a professional medical team.

Time at the pool can be fun for every member of your family. When you know what to watch for, you can help everyone stay safe while they enjoy the water.
